A word study is a great way to learn more. Join me in a brief word study now to develop a better understanding of the word believe and it’s meaning in the New Testament.
Greek Word: pisteuo
Part of speech: Verb
Used in the New Testament 241 times
Pisteuo means to believe, trust, rely upon
Related noun is pistis (faith)
John certainly used this word often especially compared with the other four gospel accounts.
John did not use the words repent or faith to describe the way people are saved. He used the word believe which includes the idea of faith and repentance. The verb believe emphasizes the act that is necessary for someone to be saved. Total dependence on the work of another is absolutely necessary. John makes it clear that complete reliance upon Jesus for salvation gives eternal life to anyone who believes. Jesus actually used a wordplay when He said that people must do “the work of God” for salvation. The point was that we must not try to work for it at all. We must simply “believe in He whom He sent.”
